Dale Lehner completed a PhD in the Modern History Department of Macquarie University in 2003. Her research interests are currently focused on the Darling Downs area in Queensland, where her forebears settled in the 1860s.  She has investigated placenames origins in fifteen Town and Shire districts on the Downs hoping to shed light on concerns of the settlers who gave those names.

In 2003 Dale also completed a detailed life account in one small district south-west of Dalby, covering the period of over 150 years since first European settlement.

Earlier interests include a Masters thesis on the post-colonial implications of Tim Winton's novel The Riders.
